What is a time trial?: A time trial is an individual bike race. Riders are released every 1 minutes from the starting point and ride by themselves through the 20 mile course. Each rider is timed individually. Riders are not allowed to ride in groups or to draft other riders. The purpose of a time trial is to give riders an opportunity to train and compete individually on a flat, fast course. Time trials are great training for cyclists of all levels and abilities as well as duathletes and triathletes.
Do I have to be a fast rider?: NO! Time trials are great training for cyclists of all levels. A time trial is a good way to challenge yourself and give yourself some goals! If you can average 14 mph or better on a 20 mile ride then you will be fine at this event.
Seeding for Fast Riders: When riders register for the time trial they will be asked for an approximate average. Faster riders will be seeded to the front and released first on the course so as to avoid them having to pass slower riders. If riders have participated in previous E2A time trials their prior finish time will be used to place them in the field. Riders that register on race day will NOT be seeded and will be released AFTER all the pre-registered riders. So, if you want to be seeded make sure you pre-register.
April Time Trial: The April Time Trial is only 12 miles and starts at 9:00 a.m. All the other Time Trials are 20 miles and start at 7:00 a.m.
Schedule: Start times for all pre-registered riders will be listed on line prior to each event. All race day sign ups will be scheduled later. Riders should be on site and check in at the start point at least 1/2 hour prior to their scheduled start time.
Course: The time trial course starts and ends at a church located at 2630 S. Miller Street, Shelbyville - 1/2 Mile south of Shelbyville Highschool. Registration is in the church and there is plenty of parking, indoor bathrooms and we'll have snacks, water, coffee and gatorade for you!! (Maybe some breakfast too if the E2A girls are feeling energetic!) The time trial course travels south on Columbus Rd. to a turn around and back. There are two significant curves but no stops or hills. The surface is smooth and fast. There are no major intersections but there are cross roads. The course IS open to traffic however traffic is very light in the mornings.
Awards: The 3 fastest overall female and male finishers will receive awards at each time trial. Age group awards will be presented proportionate to the number of entries. We'll be rounding up prizes from Gray Goat Sports and Dick's Sporting goods for winners as well.
Mile Per Hour Coins: Each rider is timed individually. Riders' average speeds will be used to present them with a completion coin that indicates the mph average that was achieved that day. For instance, if a rider completes the course with a 17.2 mph average they will receive their 17 mph coin. If they complete the course at 25.2 mph they will receive their 25 mph coin. Coins will range from 13 mph - 27 mph (or higher if needed! If you're that fast we'll special order something!). Everyone gets a coin.
Results: Full results and pictures will be posted on the website after each time trial.
Rules: Helmets must be worn by cyclists at all times that they are riding their bikes during warm up and throughout the time trial and after the time trial. Helmet straps must be buckled. Violation of helmet rules will cause disqualification of the athlete rom the event.
Drafting is NOT allowed on the time trial course and all cyclists must remain in a single file position (no riding two or three abreast) to the right side of the road except when passing. If passing cyclists have 15 seconds to exit the draft zone (Draft Zone = 3 bike lengths beside or behind another cyclist). If a cyclist remains in the draft zone of another cyclist for more than 15 seconds they will be assessed a 2 minute penalty and will be disqualified for a second offense.
RIDERS MUST STAY TO THE RIGHT OF THE ROAD. Riders who drift out toward the center line and are not riding on the right side of the road will be disqualified. Drifting or riding in the center of the lane is unsafe because fast riders or cars may be coming from behind and passing. Cyclists are not allowed to warm up on the time trial course after the first rider starts (they must use the road in the other direction).
